A new study tracks how well general-purpose frontier multimodal models can control a physical robot with no robotics-specific training, and finds the curve is steep. The authors ran nine models in fifteen configurations (reasoning-effort levels and service tiers) from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind, including GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, Opus 5.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 4 Argon, on a bimanual I2RT YAM arm rig with two wrist cameras and an overhead camera. The models emit Cartesian gripper poses directly through a closed-loop harness built on the Inspect Robots framework, with move_to, done and give_up actions, a 40-action budget per trial, and partial-credit subtask scoring graded from video by GPT-6 Astra.

The task set is six RoboDojo tasks: stacking bowls, storing objects in a safe, sorting, capping a pen, pouring fruit and standing up bottles, with 20 trials per model, configuration and task. Between July and October 2026 the best task scores doubled roughly every 53.9 days, with a bootstrap 95% interval of about 36 to 60 days, and the strongest models now average 45 to 48 percent. Throughput moved even faster: the best subtasks-per-hour rose from 12.4 to 54.4, about 4.4 times, between July and September, and the lowest cost per subtask fell from $2.36 to $0.38, about 6.2 times. No single model dominates the frontier. GPT-6 Astra at high effort was fastest at about 1.1 minutes per subtask but cost about $4.51 per subtask, while Gemini 3.8 Flash was cheapest but took about 4.2 minutes.

The qualitative findings matter as much as the trend line. Models rarely get stuck or loop; stronger models cope better with physical imperfections such as arm sag, camera parallax and ambiguous grasp feedback; and low scores mostly come from irreversible physical errors rather than failures of task reasoning. In comments, the authors note that specialized robotics foundation models they tried were outperformed on this benchmark by the general models, though the specialized models are built for a different regime. A fuller write-up has been submitted to a CoRL workshop.

The caveats are substantial and the authors state them. The benchmark is small, at six tasks on a single platform; full task completion is still rare; grading is done by another language model; and the doubling-time estimate is sensitive to whether Gemini 4 Argon counts as a new record, since it beats Opus 5.5 by only 0.13 points. The authors call their extrapolation to teleoperator parity around mid-2027 very naive. Still, it is one of the first longitudinal measurements suggesting that general LLM progress is transferring to physical manipulation at a measurable, rapid rate.

How it was discussed
  • The LessWrong post frames the result as a capability trend line, with a naive extrapolation to teleoperator parity around mid-2027.
  • TLDR's summary emphasized that models are held back by efficiency and precision rather than reasoning.

AI for Science 2026-10-27 Hacker News — AI front page 8.2 8.0/8.5/8.0

Axiom has published a complete Lean formalization of the classification of finite simple groups, the first-generation proof of which is one of the largest collective results in mathematics, historically spread across hundreds of papers and tens of thousands of pages by more than a hundred authors. The project site reports 43.1 million lines of Lean and about 2.05 million declarations, organized into roughly 100 milestones drawn from a corpus of several hundred papers and books, with every logical step checked by the Lean kernel. Core contributors listed are Dean Cureton, Vasily Ilin, Bhavik Mehta and Niels Voss, with about 30 further mathematical and engineering contributors, including Ken Ono and Jesse Thorner, and Letong Hong as principal investigator.

The site does not spell out the division of labor, but its interface refers to agents, a map of agent activity, and an initial blueprint the team gave the agents, which indicates that AI agents wrote most of the formal proof while humans supplied the structure and mathematical guidance. That scale is the striking part. Mathlib, the community library built by hand over roughly a decade, is on the order of two million lines; this single project is about twenty times larger, which is only plausible with heavy automation.

The formalization also surfaced a genuine mathematical issue. The team reports a problem in a published argument for the Unbalanced Group Theorem, one of the classification's components, and routed around it with an alternative argument described in an accompanying paper. That is exactly the kind of outcome formalization advocates have long predicted for very long proofs whose details no single person has checked.

Caveats: the site gives no completion timeline, and some figures differ between its sections, for example the source-work counts and the number of milestones, so the statistics may be measured in different ways. A 43-million-line machine-generated proof is also not human-readable in any practical sense; its value is that the kernel has checked it, not that it explains the result. It lands in the same week as OpenAI's and Anthropic's machine-produced complexity-theory claims and the formalization-gap debate around AI-written mathematics, and it is the strongest evidence yet that agent-driven formalization can operate at the scale of an entire research program.

Industry 2026-10-27 Gradient Flow (Ben Lorica)The Information — AISemafor TechnologyStratecheryTechCrunch — AITLDR (newsletter)MIT Technology Review — AI 7.9 7.0/7.8/8.8

A day after Anthropic's S-1 went public, the deeper reads of the filing focused less on the headline revenue and more on unit economics, liabilities and control. Revenue grew from $41 million in 2023 to $4.6 billion in 2025 and $16.3 billion in the first half of 2026, roughly fourteen times the same period a year earlier. More striking to analysts was the efficiency trend: Anthropic says it earns an 85 percent gross margin on serving existing models, excluding the cost of developing new ones, and generated $3.5 billion of free cash flow in the first half after burning $1.6 billion a year earlier. Ben Lorica's Gradient Flow highlights revenue per dollar of compute and infrastructure spend rising from about 40 cents in early 2025 to $2.08 in the June 2026 quarter, which also produced $974 million of operating income, an 8 percent margin, with training costs included.

The other side of the ledger is large. The $80.7 billion first-half net loss was mostly noncash remeasurement of convertible financing instruments, but Semafor points out at least $542 billion of future payments for data-center leases and chips sitting in the footnotes, alongside roughly $131 billion of cash. Semafor separately notes the risk factors return repeatedly to energy: rising power costs, delays in securing capacity, and obligations to pay for grid upgrades, with contracts structured so that Anthropic may bear those costs even if capacity is delayed or never delivered. Other risk markers from the analyses: cloud marketplaces accounted for 48 percent of revenue, and models less than six months old drove more than 80 percent of third-quarter revenue, which means each model generation has to pay for itself quickly. Marketing expense is growing faster than revenue.

On ownership, TechCrunch's reading of the note conversions is that Amazon is the largest financial winner, with $6.2 billion of convertible notes valued at about $97.9 billion, while no venture firm holds 5 percent. Governance splits control between a founders' share class carrying 50.1 percent of votes and the Long-Term Benefit Trust, with ten-year sunset provisions. The Wall Street Journal's summary puts the expected valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion, with a Nasdaq listing under ANT possibly the week before Thanksgiving, and Semafor reported global equities rose on the filing.

Why it matters: the filing is the first audited view into frontier-lab economics, and it cuts against the long-held view that pay-per-token model sales on rented cloud compute cannot be profitable. The open question every analyst raised is whether competition and the pace of model turnover will let those serving margins survive, given commitments approaching $800 billion that are hard to exit.

How it was discussed
  • The Information: the 85% serving margin on rented cloud compute is a reality check for skeptics of pay-as-you-go model economics.
  • Gradient Flow: compute economics are improving fast, but near-$800B in hard-to-exit commitments and rapid model turnover make each generation expensive to justify.
  • Semafor: the prospectus is an ink-blot test, with $131B cash and narrowing operating losses on one side and $542B in footnoted liabilities and rising energy-cost risk on the other.
  • TechCrunch: note conversions make Amazon the biggest financial winner, while no VC firm holds 5%; governance splits control between a founders' class with 50.1% of votes and the Long-Term Benefit Trust, with ten-year sunsets.
  • Stratechery: the core business is very profitable, but competition may eat the profits while shareholders face continual dilution.

Google's tensor processing units had their biggest day yet as a merchant product. On October 27 Google said Oracle will become the first major cloud provider outside Google to offer TPUs to customers from its own data centers, and The Information reported that OpenAI, one of Nvidia's most important customers and an Nvidia investee, plans to buy Google's TPUs. Financial terms of the OpenAI purchase were not disclosed. Google has been widening TPU distribution for some time, from Google Cloud access starting in 2018 to deals that place TPUs inside third-party facilities such as Fluidstack's, and now Oracle.

The demand signal is clearest in Anthropic's IPO prospectus. Anthropic disclosed a plan to spend $114.5 billion with Google Cloud, without saying how much of that is TPU compute; estimated it could spend another $125 billion to $150 billion on TPUs with Google and other providers; and committed $161.2 billion for TPU compute with Broadcom, which co-designs the chips with Google. Taken together, that is on the order of $400 billion of exposure to a single non-Nvidia accelerator family from one lab.

Revenue is lagging the deals. Google only began recognizing revenue from TPU sales into outside data centers last quarter, and its chief financial officer said the vast majority of revenue from those agreements will arrive next year. TD Cowen estimates TPUs will generate about $9.4 billion in the second half of 2026, around 13 percent of Google Cloud's revenue in that period, and could become a $138 billion business by 2028, about a third of Google Cloud. That is still a fraction of the roughly $692 billion analysts expect Nvidia to report over a comparable horizon.

Why it matters: with Anthropic already deeply committed and OpenAI now joining, the two largest frontier-model buyers outside Google are both diversifying away from a single accelerator vendor, and a credible second software and hardware stack for frontier training and serving is forming. Alphabet reports third-quarter earnings on October 28, where TPU demand is expected to be a central theme. The OpenAI deal remains single-sourced reporting with no disclosed size, so its scale relative to OpenAI's Nvidia and AMD commitments is unknown.

Google DeepMind announced Genie 4, the next generation of its real-time interactive world model, on October 27. The headline change is that it is natively multimodal: alongside the video stream it generates music-like audio, ambient sound and interactive character dialogue, which DeepMind describes as a first for a real-time world model. Gemini Omni anchors scenes in real-world appearance and behavior, while other Gemini models handle reasoning for coherence and continuity across a session. DeepMind emphasizes improved physics, including aerodynamics and collisions, and human characters that move naturally, react to their surroundings and can be steered in real time.

Interaction is through standard keyboard navigation and camera control plus natural-language edits issued mid-session: a user can change the weather, move the camera, or add people and objects, and Gemini adapts the edit to the existing scene rather than regenerating it. Genie 4 also works as an environment for agents. During generation, Gemini 3.8 Flash can act as a guiding agent that observes the scene, decomposes a goal into steps, checks incoming frames to confirm each step succeeded, and re-plans when the world changes or a user intervenes. DeepMind also shows experiments pairing Gemini 4 Argon with Genie 4 and Gemini Robotics, including a simulated Apptronik Apollo humanoid playing checkers, with task steps rendered as captions, which points at world models as training and evaluation grounds for embodied policies.

Availability is limited. Genie 4 is a research preview for trusted testers, with rollout planned first to Google AI Ultra subscribers through Project Genie and then to early-access partners in the Gemini API and AI Studio; a waitlist is open. All generated video and audio carries SynthID watermarks, and Google says internal safety evaluations preceded the preview.

DeepMind lists the limitations itself: scenes are coherent over short sessions, but visual detail and object permanence drift over longer runs, after multiple prompt edits, or during movement, and complex physical interactions, real-time audio accuracy, legible text and spatial accuracy remain open problems. The announcement gives no resolution, frame rate or quantitative comparison with Genie 3, which shipped in August 2025. TechCrunch placed the release in a crowded field that includes Runway's world-model products and a wave of world-model acquisitions, noting that the end-user product for these systems is still unclear.

AI for Science 2026-10-27 Anthropic NewsThe Information — AI 7.5 7.5/7.5/7.5

Anthropic published an update on deep research partnerships with six drug developers, BigHat Biosciences, Bristol Myers Squibb, Divergence Labs, Enveda, Generate Biomedicines and The Column Group, and disclosed that it has started drug discovery programs of its own, including programs for rare childhood forms of muscular dystrophy where Claude handles much of the scientific and operational work. The Information reported the same day that Anthropic acquired Mithril Medicine, a one-person startup developing treatments for two rare forms of muscular dystrophy, which appears to be the vehicle for those in-house programs. Partners published technical reports and preprints alongside the post.

The case studies span the pipeline rather than only molecule design. At Generate Biomedicines, six scientists used Claude Code to redesign part of a CAR T-cell construct for solid tumors; one design was about 70 percent shorter than the standard and, in lab tests, let immune cells make roughly ten times as many receptors, killed tumor cells more efficiently, and persisted longer. At Divergence Labs, working on food allergy drugs that strip IgE from immune cells, Claude turned the program goals into a design plan and largely autonomously generated about 35,000 antibody designs in a month; early testing found three IgE binders and 20 designs that dislodged IgE, three of them more strongly than the standard medication.

At BigHat, Claude connected to the company's lab data system proposed variants of two antibody-fragment leads, about 1,010 of which were made and tested in roughly ten weeks. Midway, Claude and an Anthropic researcher concluded that the standard heat-stability and aggregation metrics were misleading and proposed new ones, which held up. The best variants bound more than ten times more tightly, one stayed soluble 18 degrees Celsius higher, and the other aggregated over 100 times more slowly. At Enveda, on 1,061 pages of manufacturing documentation Claude caught all 11 issues human reviewers found plus seven they missed, cutting review time by 89 percent, and drafted a regulatory document in four hours that took about three months by hand. The Column Group is founding Pleiades, a company designed to run many more programs per scientist using Claude, and Bristol Myers Squibb is using Claude to assess early clinical-trial plans and estimate their probability of success, with expansion planned for 2027.

All results are early and preclinical or operational, and come from Anthropic and its partners rather than independent evaluation. The significance is strategic: a frontier lab moving from selling model access to owning drug programs, alongside its recent guest-investigator program and toxin-binder design work.

How it was discussed
  • Anthropic's post frames the work as finding bottlenecks across the whole pipeline, not just molecule design.
  • The Information framed the Mithril Medicine acquisition as a sign of Anthropic's growing ambitions to own drug discovery itself.

CoD is initialized on action-labeled demos, then the model predicts the future each CoD induces and RL reinforces chains whose imagined outcomes match observed ones, so unlabeled human and robot video supervise the same reasoning space. It reports 99.3% on LIBERO, 89.9% on LIBERO-Plus, 93.6% on RoboTwin 2.0 and 81.5% on SimplerEnv; ablations credit world-model supervision for better future prediction.

The paper argues the VLA-vs-world-action-model debate conflates three choices: backbone initialization, the objective on future observations, and whether future-prediction machinery is kept at inference. JAM decouples them: any pretrained visual backbone plus an action expert, trained with an action loss and a foresight loss that predicts frozen encodings of recorded future frames via a head discarded after training.

Against FastWAM, JAM raises LIBERO/LIBERO-Plus/RoboTwin success from 97.0/55.3/91.2% to 98.2/64.5/91.4%, and with cached targets cuts estimated online training FLOPs per sample by 73%.

An ACLU write-up compiles cases where AI analysis of automated license plate reader data flagged drivers for “suspicious” travel patterns, after which officers stopped them on minor or disputed traffic pretexts. Flock Safety said in 2025 its AI could alert police to such patterns and to vehicles often seen together. Cases include a Virginia woman shown a map of her plate sightings by an officer claiming to be FBI, a Texas driver who won a jury verdict after dashcam footage contradicted the cited violation, and CBP questioning a California grandmother about casino visits.

Training samples three diffusion objectives per example: video-only on robot and human video, joint video+action on demonstrations with an asymmetric attention mask, and action-only conditioned on clean image latents.

At inference it denoises a compact action sequence in one DDIM step without generating video, producing action chunks in 84 ms on consumer hardware, with strong simulation and real-robot results at lower inference cost than comparable joint video-action policies.

The paper tests whether concepts are shared across modalities in unified multimodal models by finding steering vectors on one modality's tokens and adding them to the other's. Across concepts such as emotion and object size, vectors transfer zero-shot in both directions, text-to-image and image-to-text.

Looped transformers reuse a shared block for extra depth and are often trained with BPTT truncated to the last few loops to save compute. Across nearly 600 runs varying model size, tokens and forward/backward loop counts, the authors fit a unified scaling law via effective parameters.

When loop counts are jointly optimized the law favors full BPTT, and full BPTT through fewer loops beats truncated settings at matched compute. With model size free, two fully trained loops is optimal, reaching lower validation loss than the compute-optimal non-looped model with about 27% fewer non-embedding parameters for 8% more training compute.

The authors split memory's net value relative to RAG into a memory benefit (gains from reorganizing facts or distilling preferences) and a memory tax (evidence removed or obscured by those same transformations).

This survey gives an operational definition and process framework for recursive self-improvement (RSI) in large-model systems, covering diagnosis, proposal generation, evaluation and update implementation, plus recursive changes to the improvement mechanisms themselves.

It organizes trustworthiness requirements into genuine sustained improvement, behavioral constraints and alignment, security and privacy, and transparency and controllability, and reviews risks such as flawed evaluations inflating gains, capability regression, weakened constraint compliance, persistent compromised artifacts and invalidated verification. It calls for independent, longitudinal assessment of RSI systems.

HaMo combines non-parametric experience accumulation in the harness with parametric adaptation of the model. Trajectories are distilled into strategy-level experience cards for immediate retrieval, while an experience-conditioned continual-learning objective trains the model to interpret, ground and execute retrieved strategies in new contexts.

A retrieval-coverage criterion selects compact, complementary trajectories for parameter updates. On web-agent workflows HaMo beats harness-only and model-only adaptation under within- and cross-domain shifts, improving both retention and adaptation.

The delta-learning hypothesis proposes building DPO pairs from just two models, treating the larger model's response as preferred, without an external judge. This paper shows theoretically and empirically that fixed model pairs introduce generator-specific biases that predict the preference label independent of response quality.

As a result, DPO on single-pair data consistently underperforms multi-model preference data, with training dynamics consistent with reward hacking on those biases. Simply adding more generators, even without a judge, partially mitigates the effect, making generator diversity a key factor in preference-data construction.

An empirical study of GPT-6 Astra across four CAD tasks—model understanding, generation, editing and evaluation—at varying complexity.

The model supports multiple workflow stages and succeeds on some nontrivial geometry, but recurring errors in freeform geometry, parameter dependencies and part mating separate visually plausible output from valid, editable models. Agentic iterative refinement helps but does not reliably fix critical errors, and long completion times limit practical use.

The paper splits constrained decoding into format, validity and reasoning constraints and shows theoretically that suitable constraints can preserve or improve performance by pruning invalid paths. Causal ablations across eleven open models from four families find that apparent degradation mostly stems from non-equivalent prompting and output formats, not decoder-level masking. Validity constraints improve reliability and answer extraction, and reasoning constraints can raise accuracy when they enforce useful trajectories.
