Autonomy dominated the Association of the United States Army's annual meeting this week, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used a Wednesday panel with the service secretaries to talk through the planned Autonomous Warfare Command, known as AUTOWARCOM. The four-star combatant command, announced in September, is scheduled to activate by October 1, 2027. Hegseth described his vision for its first two years as continuous iteration, saying the department is moving faster with each cycle. Defense One noted that the session offered few details on what the command will look like or how it will carry out its mission. Hegseth did not say whether a search for a commander is under way.

Asked why a combatant command is the right vehicle for speeding up acquisition and fielding, Hegseth said the department would use rank to drive change. He said AUTOWARCOM would handle training and doctrine for unmanned systems as well as procurement. Several organizational moves are already happening around it. The Army announced it is renaming its Futures and Concepts Command as Futures and Autonomy Command, which will be the service's component under AUTOWARCOM. Derrick Anderson, the assistant secretary for special operations and low-intensity conflict, said the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group, which grew out of the Replicator initiative and is run by the Defense Innovation Unit, will be folded into a new Task Force Autonomous Warfare inside Special Operations Command. Officials also described theater innovation labs abroad and an Army program opening test ranges to drone, counter-drone, and long-range fires companies, with a promised response to applications within four weeks.

The money is the most concrete part of the story. At a separate Project Agincourt panel, Hegseth said the Pentagon is requesting roughly 50 billion dollars in reconciliation funding to scale autonomous and robotic systems. He described it as a one-time investment, not a recurring allocation. C4ISRNET reports that this is separate from the fiscal 2027 budget request's 53.6 billion dollars for the Drone Dominance initiative. That request breaks down into 16.9 billion for unmanned-system procurement, 14.4 billion for counter-unmanned systems, 13.5 billion for contested logistics, 4.5 billion for collaborative autonomy, and 4.3 billion for institutional systems and personnel. Hegseth said the department expects to be dealing with hundreds of thousands of one-way attack systems this year and millions in the years to come. For comparison, the Army's December 2025 plan funded about 340,000 small drones over two years for 1 billion dollars.

On human control, Army Chief Technology Officer Alex Miller said that for counter-battery fire and air and missile defense, which operate at superhuman speed and scale, the Army wants humans on the loop rather than in it. He cast soldiers as crew chiefs for autonomous systems. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink said the Air Force is experimenting with autonomous fighter aircraft at Creech Air Force Base.

The caveats are significant. The command's structure, leadership, and authorities remain undefined. It is not yet clear how the reconciliation request relates to the budget lines, and the panel focused mostly on today's remotely operated unmanned platforms rather than truly autonomous ones. Still, the combination of a dedicated combatant command, consolidated autonomy organizations, and requests in the tens of billions marks the largest institutional commitment to military autonomy the department has made so far.

How it was discussed
  • Defense One emphasized that the panel offered few details on AUTOWARCOM's structure, leadership or mission ahead of its Oct. 2027 activation.
  • Breaking Defense highlighted the reorganization: the Defense Autonomous Warfare Group absorbed into a new SOCOM Task Force Autonomous Warfare.
  • C4ISRNET focused on the money: a ~$50B one-time reconciliation ask, separate from FY27's $53.6B Drone Dominance request.

Anthropic told prospective investors in its planned initial public offering that its revenue reached 16.8 billion dollars in the third quarter of 2026, according to people briefed on the numbers and reported by The Information. The disclosure came at a private investor meeting in San Francisco on Wednesday, and it is one of the clearest views yet into the finances of a frontier AI lab preparing to list on public markets.

The headline figure represents growth of about 45 percent over the second quarter, which implies second-quarter revenue of roughly 11.6 billion dollars. The third quarter alone was more than 3.6 times Anthropic's revenue for all of 2025, which puts last year's total somewhere under about 4.7 billion dollars. Annualizing the third quarter gives a run rate in the mid-60-billion-dollar range, a scale that would have seemed implausible for any AI model provider eighteen months ago.

The more important detail for investors is the trajectory. In the second quarter, revenue grew by more than 140 percent versus the first three months of the year, a surge The Information attributes to intense demand for Claude Code, Anthropic's agentic coding product. Dropping from triple-digit quarterly growth to roughly 45 percent is still extraordinary in absolute terms, but it is a clear deceleration, and some attendees left the meeting expecting that Anthropic will need to keep its valuation target in check rather than pricing the offering on the assumption that the second-quarter pace continues.

Why this matters beyond Anthropic itself: frontier labs have so far been valued largely on private-market narratives, compute commitments, and run-rate claims. An IPO process forces quarterly disclosure, and these numbers suggest that enterprise and developer spending on agentic tools, coding above all, has become a revenue engine large enough to support the compute bills these labs carry. They also set a public benchmark against which competitors such as OpenAI will be compared.

There are caveats. The figures come from people familiar with the presentation rather than a filed prospectus, so details such as revenue recognition, gross margin, the mix between API and subscription revenue, and the share flowing through cloud partners are not yet public. Growth rates at this scale are also sensitive to a small number of very large customers and to pricing changes, so a single quarter's deceleration does not by itself establish a trend. The formal registration statement, when it appears, should answer most of these questions.

GreenWAM is presented as a world foundation model for robotics that is meant to do two jobs at once: predict how a robot's actions will change a scene, which is the classic world-model role, and choose those actions, which is the policy role. Most prior systems are built and benchmarked for only one of these, and each robot logs actions in its own format, which makes cross-robot pretraining awkward. The paper's central question is whether a single model can fill both roles across very different bodies, and which design choices make that work.

The recipe has three parts. First, a shared anatomical action space expresses the actions of 20 robot families, ranging from bimanual arms to dexterous humanoids, in common joint coordinates, so data from different platforms lands in one representation instead of a patchwork of per-robot action heads. Second, the model is trained jointly on these families in three modes: purely visual prediction, action-conditioned prediction, and a combined world-action mode. Third, when the model is turned into a policy, a dedicated action expert is split off from the generator rather than asking the video generator to emit actions directly.

On the world-model side, the authors report top-tier trajectory, depth and 3D accuracy on WorldArena 1.0, ahead of every world-action model and video generator in their comparison. As a policy, it places among the top entries of the RoboTwin 2.0 leaderboard, achieves the highest zero-shot success on LIBERO-plus among compared methods, and is competitive with dedicated vision-language-action and world-action policies on CALVIN and LIBERO. The most practically interesting result is on a real humanoid: after adaptation, GreenWAM succeeds more often than policies adapted from Physical Intelligence's π0.5 and from NVIDIA's Cosmos 3 Edge. The model can also be distilled into a single-step policy so that it runs fast enough for real-time control, addressing the usual objection that generative world models are too slow to sit in the control loop.

Controlled experiments support three claims. Specializing the model to robot data improves world prediction and control together, rather than trading one against the other. Splitting off the action expert helps most when it is done at the start of adaptation. And keeping the world-model training modes active during policy adaptation preserves robustness to scene changes, suggesting the predictive objective acts as a regularizer for the policy.

Why it matters: the field has been converging on world-action models as a successor or complement to VLAs, with π0.5, Cosmos and various video-generator-based policies as reference points. GreenWAM's contribution is a unified cross-embodiment action representation plus evidence that one model can be strong on both prediction and control benchmarks simultaneously. Caveats are worth noting. The summary here is based on the abstract, since the full paper could not be retrieved for this digest; the phrasing of several results, such as top-tier, among the top entries and competitive, signals that GreenWAM does not dominate every benchmark, and the real-humanoid comparison is against adapted baselines on the authors' own tasks. Exact numbers, model scale, data volume, control frequency after distillation and release plans should be checked in the paper itself.

Temporal Flow Policy (TFP) argues robot policy memories wrongly treat each observation update as equal time, and learns memory dynamics that advance a latent state according to measured intervals, with observations setting content and timescales. TFP conditions Diffusion Policy and π0.5 and trains with their native imitation losses. It beats recurrent and state-space memories given the same intervals, and a learned-gate interval variant; memory readouts recover time since events and motion through occlusion, and altering supplied intervals predictably delays or advances actions. Gains hold on real timing/memory tasks and LIBERO.

A memo from Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg directs DOD to begin a small-scale deployment of automated classification within six months, using the Air Force-developed Automated Classification Management Environment (ACME). If successful, ACME would become the single authoritative digital reference for all original classification decisions, historically made by designated human officials. The Air Force's RFI cited high error rates, over-classification and a backlog of roughly 140 million hardcopy pages. DOD has not said which models ACME uses; CNAS analysts flag risks of misclassification at scale and aggregation exposure.

One model can therefore act directly as a policy or plan by scoring sampled actions with its latent dynamics. Compared with prior JEPA visual planners, success rises from 28.6% to 89.7% on contact-rich tasks and from 10.9% to 46.2% on long-horizon tasks, and planning runs 32.3x faster. Git's full-clone model broke at roughly 25 million CI checkouts per day on a 100 GB history; Scion uses on-demand virtualized checkouts, server-side commits and a three-tier cache with over 99% hit rates, using 200x less CPU and memory than prior git mirrors. It also dropped the locking merge queue in favor of post-merge testing with Claude resolving conflicts.

Built on RLPD, RSSM-RLPD learns to dribble a ball into a goal from multiple start positions after 30 minutes of real interaction, reaching 100% success versus 0% for a feed-forward policy at the same budget. In simulation it also beats behavior cloning, feed-forward and GRU baselines.

MetaGenSim frames Active Generative Simulation: optimizing a simulator's data-generation distribution for downstream real-world performance. An auxiliary rater network trained via meta-gradients discovers high-utility regions of a user-specified simulation parameter space, removing manual sim-to-real alignment. It delivers a 150% relative gain in real full-task success over uniform generation, beats retrieval baselines, and matches expert manual alignment. Distributions found with a cheap proxy policy transfer to VLA fine-tuning, and skill stitching handles cases without exact task alignment.

AutoRSR automates real-to-sim-to-real: from multi-view scans, robot states and open-vocabulary queries it reconstructs the workspace, extracts object assets and registers the scene to the robot base at metric scale, then expands a few reference motions into executable trajectories via interpolation and domain randomization, with no manual annotation, calibration or teleoperation. Policies trained on 1K generated episodes per task reach 73.3–86.7% real-world success on three tasks, comparable to π0.5 trained on 150 teleoperated demos, at roughly an order of magnitude less human time.

This study disentangles how world modeling helps VLAs by instantiating four paradigms (implicit future alignment, explicit future query, mixture-of-transformers future expert, external world predictor) in one framework and varying representations and backbones across in-domain, OOD, long-horizon, dynamic, few-shot and real-world settings. Findings: representation value is paradigm-dependent but 2D semantic targets help consistently; no paradigm dominates, though the decoupled MoT future expert is strongest on OOD robustness; decoupled designs suit pretrained VLAs best; and world modeling helps most on long-horizon and dynamic tasks.

Trained on RL policies for the Unitree G1, it samples networks that run on the real robot for walking, dancing and spin kicks. Naive INT4 KV rollouts degrade learning even with truncated importance sampling, so KV4-RL keeps attention sinks and recent context in INT8 while quantizing the rest to INT4 without calibration. Over 400 GRPO iterations on Qwen3-8B-Base it gives 1.80x cumulative rollout speedup (1.97x late in training) and 1.27x full-iteration speedup, with six-benchmark accuracy within 0.5 points of BF16 rollouts on 4B and 8B models.

On clinical consultation, such policies raise rubric coverage while appropriateness on held-out physician criteria falls below the untrained model. ProRubric groups criteria offline into a few protocol-level dimensions, each of which counts only if all its criteria hold and no failure clause fires, without changing the optimizer. On-policy distillation assumes the teacher can reach a correct answer from any student prefix; the authors show this 'recoverability' fails on incorrect rollouts, where the teacher follows the student's error despite recognizing it. CriticOPD has the teacher critique a wrong rollout and the student rewrite after the error; the teacher scores the revision with the critique as privileged information, while the student trains on the revision without it. On two Qwen3 students across six math benchmarks it improves over standard OPD, most on competition-level problems.

Newer releases consistently help agents, and trajectory analysis points to discoverability, granularity and observability as the key properties. The ANIS framework then synthesizes agent-native interfaces from installed app capabilities: on 368 tasks across eight apps, atomic interfaces beat native SDK use by 3.8 and 3.5 points (DeepSeek V4 Flash, Claude Haiku 4.5) with about 73% fewer tokens, and goal-level commands reach 74.5% and 67.4% success.

LVRL replaces a trained critic with a pretrained LLM that estimates policy-aware state values in context, conditioned on group rollouts and calibrated with known initial and terminal values, so value differences yield per-step advantages instead of GRPO's uniform trajectory advantage. An extension, LVOPD, focuses on-policy distillation from an expert on actions that lower estimated value. In query-first retrieval, where capacity should not bind, Mamba still trails Transformers substantially. Interventions show selection gates alone can swing accuracy between extremes, so the mechanism is expressive enough; but probes reveal the token-relevance signal emerges gradually with depth and gates track it only several layers later, leaving retrieval-critical layers misaligned. The bottleneck is thus delayed relevance information, suggesting architectural fixes beyond enlarging state.

Across 12 tasks over six kinds of symbolic system, it beats the same LLM's dense-embedding baseline on every task with Gemma-2-9B and 11 of 12 with Llama-3.1-8B, by up to 45 points, robustly across SAE layers and configurations. Each match decomposes into named SAE features, making alignments inspectable.

Stanford economist Gabriel Unger and Arvind Narayanan argue that AI's automation trajectory is driven by incentives and CS culture rather than technological necessity, and propose a decentralized research program for augmentation. They name four open problems: white-box agents exposing intermediate steps and uncertainty (process-trace data barely exists outside coding), low-latency interaction, continuous rather than delegate-then-verify collaboration, and benchmarks that measure human-AI teams instead of autonomous performance. Proposed levers include research prizes, tax policy, government procurement and meaningful human-oversight requirements.

At Config India, Figma introduced Specs, a Markdown editor for codifying a team's design language that links to canvas elements, code layers and FigJam, plus a central store of design libraries, code libraries and guidelines that its on-canvas agent references to keep output on-brand. Code layers, which turn designs into interactive coded prototypes, moved to open beta, and Figma's MCP server gained 20+ new client integrations. Figma framed this around AI raising code output about 17x while releases grew only about 1.3x.

REVEAL transfers experience from frontier-model agent trajectories to a frozen open model without training or source-model internals. It replays text trajectories in the target to elicit 'agentic latents', meaning anchored states and profiles of feedback–response cycles, then contrasts matched events from successful and failed rollouts to derive a target-specific steering vector applied before each response. Within-benchmark tests on Terminal-Bench 2.1 and Humanity's Last Exam with tools show higher accuracy than unmodified agents for three target models.

In an OpenAI customer story, the coding-agent company Amp describes three additions. Sign in with ChatGPT gives users more tokens and access to GPT-6 Astra. Puck is a conversational assistant that launches and coordinates other agents and finds past threads. Voice calls with Puck run on GPT-Live-1. Amp says OpenAI models handle most of its tokens, that some users burn about 10B tokens a week, and that it is testing an Ultrafast mode for GPT-6 Astra. The post gives no benchmarks or pricing.

An OpenAI customer story says SentinelOne uses Daybreak, OpenAI's model-access program for cyber defenders, to reverse-engineer sophisticated malware samples. Work that takes a top researcher 4–6 weeks now produces comparable output in about eight hours, according to SentinelOne's Chief AI Officer. Higher throughput lets the team compare many more samples, find shared components across seemingly unrelated threats, and map relationships between malware families, with humans still accountable for conclusions. No independent evaluation is given.

Anna Goldie and Azalia Mirhoseini, who led Google's AlphaChip work, described Ricursive Intelligence at TechCrunch Disrupt: an AI system that designs chips, learns from each iteration and improves subsequent designs. Rather than partitioning a chip into dozens of blocks, it optimizes entire chips, surfacing unconventional layouts. Goldie argued compute demand could grow 10,000x within five years and that more efficient silicon, not proportionally more data centers, must close the gap. No benchmarks or customers were disclosed.

Zvi Mowshowitz reviews the year's AI consciousness discourse, triggered by Anthropic's new terms-of-service clause against sustained, needless abusive or cruel behavior toward its models. He argues both affirmative and dismissive positions are highly motivated and overconfident, distinguishes consciousness from moral and legal personhood, and notes his poll's share saying current AIs are probably moral patients rose from 15% to 35%. He also covers Anthropic's consultations with religious thinkers and urges it to explain the abrupt removal of older Claude models from Bedrock.

A JAMA Health Forum viewpoint by RAND researchers (McBain, Cantor, Zhang, Barsky) examines mental-health risks AI chatbots pose to minors, citing 2025 Pew data that 64% of US teens use chatbots, roughly 3 in 10 daily, and 19% for mental-health advice. It proposes four design-focused regulatory priorities: safety standards, independent testing, protective defaults, and ongoing harm monitoring, shifting emphasis from content rules toward how chatbot products are designed for young users.

A War on the Rocks essay examines two recent UK military AI deals. In the first, the UK became the first foreign partner with access to Ukraine's Avengers AI Labs battlefield data, in August. The second is a US AI and autonomy partnership signed in September. The authors flag three risks: dependence on US providers, including a possible kill switch; weak technical guardrails; and escalation, since wargaming studies show models acting aggressively, including toward nuclear use. Recommendations include context-specific benchmarks with the AI Security Institute, avoiding lock-in, and preserving meaningful human control.

Swedish broadcaster TV4 has pushed the new season of its reality show The Challenge to 2027 after edited material was wiped. Aftonbladet reports that an AI agent deleted the season and that several hundred days of work were lost. TV4 confirmed only a "technical failure" that requires re-editing, and the tool involved has not been named. It is another reported case of agents carrying out destructive file operations in production workflows without adequate safeguards or backups.

CopilotKit released CLiF in early access, which captures both agent trajectories (runs, tool calls, state changes) and product trajectories (user clicks and resulting server requests) via the AG-UI protocol. On a schedule it mines recurring patterns and friction and proposes SKILL.md files that reach agents without redeploys after approval, plus production-derived evals and fine-tuning datasets. Adapters cover LangGraph, Mastra, Google ADK and Microsoft Agent Framework; it is self-hostable on Kubernetes or ECS. The claimed 80% reduction in repetitive tasks is an unsourced vendor figure.

A short (3-page) arXiv paper describes Minions, a system that aggregates the largely idle GPUs of Apple Silicon Macs across an organization into a virtual GPU cloud for large-scale ML inference, with flexible task scheduling and fault tolerance for devices joining and leaving. The pitch is using already-owned hardware instead of waiting on costly, inelastic centralized GPU capacity. The abstract reports no quantitative throughput or cost results.
