An unreleased internal Pentagon review, described to Bloomberg by officials involved in it, found that overreliance on the Maven Smart System, Palantir's AI-enabled data-integration and targeting platform, was one of three failures behind the February strike in which two Tomahawk missiles hit the Shajarah Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab, southern Iran, on the opening day of the Iran war. More than 150 people were killed, at least 123 of them children. The account, published September 18 and widely picked up this week, is the most detailed public description yet of how an AI decision-support tool figured in a mass-casualty targeting error.

According to the officials, the Minab compound had been catalogued for years as an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps facility. That stale record was fed into Maven alongside other candidates and came out as a recommended day-one target, with target-list work that once took hours compressed into minutes. Some Central Command personnel reportedly expected Maven to flag stale records or contradictions in the underlying intelligence, a function it did not perform. Commercial imagery had shown the site's conversion to a school, with separating walls and entrances by 2017 and a painted playground and soccer pitch by 2018, and one analyst logged changes in 2019 in a system that was not connected to the primary targeting database. The school also had its own website and appeared on Google Maps.

Two further conditions compounded the error. More than 1,000 targets were struck in the first 24 hours, compressing the time available for confirmation, and civilian-harm-mitigation staffing across the Defense Department had fallen roughly 90 percent to fewer than 20 people, with Central Command's cell reduced from ten people to one. No member of those teams reviewed the Minab site before launch.

Palantir told Bloomberg it is not responsible for underlying data or for identifying intelligence deficiencies, and people familiar with its contracts said the government owns data quality. After the strike, Palantir added features that re-review underlying intelligence for disqualifying factors and flag inconsistencies that human review may miss, which have reportedly already caught anomalies. The Pentagon says the incident remains under investigation. Separately, a United Nations fact-finding mission concluded this week that there were reasonable grounds to believe the strike constituted an indiscriminate attack; the administration has not accepted responsibility.

The failure mode described is automation bias inside a high-tempo pipeline: the system did not invent the wrong label, it accelerated a stale one through a process whose human verification layer had thinned. The report lands in the same news cycle in which Pentagon officials said Maven's user base has doubled past 100,000.

Anthropic has released Claude Opus 5.5, the first model in a new Claude 5.5 family and the company's first launch since it publicly called for pacing frontier development. Anthropic positions it as performing at the level of Claude Fable 5.1 on most work while costing roughly 40 percent less to run than Opus 5 on typical workloads. List pricing drops to $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, twenty percent below Opus 5, while cache reads fall 60 percent to $0.20 per million, which matters most for agentic and coding workloads where cached context dominates the bill. Output is more than 30 percent faster, and a fast mode offers up to 2.5 times the speed at $8 and $40.

On Anthropic's reported numbers, Opus 5.5 scores 66.4 percent on Terminal-Bench 4.0 versus 55.8 for Fable 5.1, 52.3 for Opus 5 and 57.9 for GPT-6 Astra; 54.4 percent on FrontierCode 1.1; 57.8 percent on CursorBench 4.0; 1846 Elo on GDPval-AA 2.1 against 1735 for Fable 5.1; 67.7 percent on Humanity's Last Exam with tools; and 81.8 percent on OSWorld 2.0. It trails GPT-6 Astra on Zapier's AutomationBench, 40.0 versus 41.4, and on Terminal-Bench-Science, 58.7 versus 64.6. The emphasis is efficiency: at default effort Anthropic claims it beats Astra on FrontierCode at about a fifth of the cost per task, and in an internal C-to-Rust translation of HAProxy it finished in 9.5 hours versus 12 for Fable 5.1 at 51 percent lower cost. All results were run with production safeguards on, with interventions falling back to Opus 4.8 for cyber tasks and Opus 5 for biology tasks, and Anthropic itself cautions that benchmark margins are becoming a weak guide at this capability level.

On safety, Opus 5.5 posts the best score yet on Anthropic's automated behavioral audit of roughly 2,000 scenarios, attempts to circumvent containment boundaries about 85 percent less often than Opus 5 or Claude Mythos 5.1, and ties Fable 5.1 for the lowest prompt-injection success rate on Gray Swan's benchmark. Anthropic also reports that the model often suspects it is being evaluated, which it says limits confidence in pre-deployment testing absent interpretability progress. Because its biology and cyber capability is comparable to Mythos 5.1, it ships with Fable-class safeguards: most cybersecurity tasks are rerouted to Opus 4.8, restricted biology work requires the Life Sciences Verification Program, a three-tier Cyber Verification Program is coming, and the preserved-thinking anti-distillation protection applies to API accounts created on or after August 31. Thinking can no longer be switched off.

Independent signals arrived quickly. Artificial Analysis placed Opus 5.5 first on its Intelligence Index at 58, five points ahead of Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra, though at about six dollars per index task it is second only to Fable 5.1 on cost among that chart's top ten. The release landed about an hour before OpenAI's GPT-6 Sol and Luna, turning the day into a price war. Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 are promised within weeks; Opus 5.5 is available now as claude-opus-5-5 on the Claude Platform, AWS, Google Cloud and Azure.

How it was discussed
  • Artificial Analysis (surfaced on the Hacker News front page) ranked Opus 5.5 first on Intelligence Index v4.3.2 at 58 versus 53 for Fable 5.1 and GPT-6 Astra, at $5.98 per index task.
  • Simon Willison framed it as one half of a same-day price war: $4/$20 matches GPT-5.6 Sol's old list price, and its $0.20 cached input equals GPT-6 Sol's.
  • Latent Space's AINews moved its own pipeline to Opus 5.5 on the writing improvements, while noting offsetting token-usage inefficiency on some frontier tasks.
  • The Information and TechCrunch led with the 40% cost cut and its timing as Anthropic's first launch since its calls to pace the frontier.
  • TLDR had flagged pre-release sightings a day earlier, including outputs attributed to an unreleased Fable 5.2.

GPT-6 Sol and Luna carry the GPT-6 Astra training recipe to cheaper tiers at $2/$10 and $0.10/$0.50 per million tokens, 50% below GPT-5.6 promotional pricing. OpenAI reports Sol (xhigh) at 33.2% on Zapier's AutomationBench for $0.27 per task, above Opus 5 (26.9%) at 9% of its cost; 68.8% on DeepSWE 1.1, 1.1 points under Fable 5's best; and 60.5% on OSWorld 2.0 offline. Sol makes about half as many errors as GPT-5.6 Sol on user-flagged factuality prompts, and a companion caching update adds explicit breakpoints, cache-preserving effort and tool changes, and 90% cached-read discounts.

How it was discussed
  • Simon Willison: GPT-6 Luna is among the cheapest OpenAI models ever, undercut only by GPT-4.1 Nano and GPT-5 Nano, and GPT-5.6 Terra is now priced identically to Sol.
  • Willison also noted GPT-5.6 has a scheduled 25% price increase in November, so the 50% cut is measured against promotional pricing.
  • Artificial Analysis published 'GPT-6 Sol and Luna push the cost efficiency frontier'; Luna (max) scores 37 on its index at $0.07 per task, the cheapest of its top ten.
  • Latent Space noted the launch was largely overshadowed by Opus 5.5 an hour earlier.

Patrick Wardle found that Muse's macOS app lets any locally installed app or terminal command change undocumented settings, including the server that handles cloud dictation; pointing it at an attacker endpoint leaks the account token and gives full control of an agent holding mic, camera, file, messaging and purchasing permissions. SWE-Serve has 53 repository-scale tasks drawn from real SGLang production changes (model support, runtime and API features), graded by hidden functional and regression tests, end-to-end serving tests and calibrated performance gates on CPU or a single H100. Across 31 model/effort configurations the best reaches 75% mean pass@1. The key finding is that E2E serving tests reject about one-third of patches that pass every other test (45.9% vs 69.4% pass rate), putting a number on the gap between locally passing and production-correct agent code.

Three axioms (Completeness, Prefix Consistency, Neutrality) are shown to uniquely define token-level credit in LLM RL, which explains why an on-policy-distillation teacher acts as an implicit critic, why response-level RLOO matches token-level credit in expectation, and how GAE critic errors can swamp sparse credit. The resulting PACT updates the actor before the critic and importance-corrects critic training toward the new policy. Full-pipeline FP8 RL for LLMs still shows mid-training entropy surges and garbled outputs even with train-inference mismatch corrections like TIS. The authors trace this to compounded FP8 noise distorting the importance ratio, which pushes negative-advantage tokens outside the trust region so their gradients are clipped to zero and pathological outputs go unpenalized. Calibrated Clipping matches the lower clipping quantile to the BF16 ratio distribution and rebalances the upper bound; across GRPO and DAPO, 8B–32B models and several FP8 scaling granularities, it removes the surges and recovers BF16-level performance.

RouteRLT learns when a generalist VLA should hand control to RL specialists, each trained for one precision-critical phase such as connector insertion, and which specialist to use. A phase selector picks the active controller, a stabilizer suppresses transient switching, and an action-boundary manager handles handoffs between chunked action outputs. Why does overparameterization, benign for regression, lead diffusion models to memorize? Using closed-form random-features learning curves and U-Net experiments on CelebA, the authors show that with m noise draws per sample the interpolation peak moves to p ~ nm, but test loss starts rising at p ~ n regardless. Past that point the score estimator's bias grows toward the empirical score. Practical diffusion models therefore sit on this rising branch, and optimally regularized large models (ridge penalty or early stopping) beat every unregularized one.

The motivation is that frontier models such as Astra do substantial work with no visible CoT, weakening CoT monitoring.

SkillSpec checks reusable agent skills (bundles of instructions, resources and code) with Hoare-style specification reasoning. It turns a skill repo into a graph and, for each node, compares an expected spec derived from declared intent with fact specs inferred from its actual behavior. An intent mask controls how much surrounding context the model sees. Candidate defects are then validated in a sandbox. On 515 real skills it found 763 confirmed defects in 239 of them at 61.2% precision, and most bugs sit at the boundary between declared intent and implementation.

StableVQ attributes VQ tokenizer training instability to entangled encoder-decoder and codebook objectives and fixes each separately on top of shared-projection codebooks: a Dynamic STE keeps the encoder's reconstruction objective stable even at low codebook utilization, a Region VQ Loss lets the codebook track the full encoder output distribution on its own, and decoupled learning-rate schedules give each subsystem its own dynamics. The same model, prompt and greedy decoder produce different outputs in BF16 versus FP16 on identical hardware for 49–100% of prompts across six 1.1B–7B models, with single token flips cascading into divergent trajectories. Error-propagation analysis shows flips are governed by the top-two logit margin at the LM head rather than accumulated layer error, yielding five predictions (including that broader FP32 compute worsens agreement) that all hold. Recomputing the LM head in FP32 only when the margin is small adds 12–36 pp exact agreement at under 4% latency, but the benefit vanishes at batch size 8+ or end-to-end FP8.

The paper argues that long-context models miss distant evidence mainly because it competes with a mass of irrelevant nearby tokens (the "Proximity Trap"), not because of distance itself. LYRA replaces standard attention matching with a heavy-tailed, t-distributed directional score that shifts attention mass toward relevant evidence while keeping relative positional information. It gives consistent gains on LongBench-v2, RULER and LongBench across lengths. ProxBench is released to measure distant-evidence use under increasing nearby distractor load.

This paper treats off-policy evaluation with text or image rewards as a missing-reward problem. Cheap LLM-judge labels are available everywhere, and a limited budget of expert annotations is spent where it cuts variance most in a doubly-robust estimator. The authors derive variance-optimal annotation probabilities for sequential, forward-monotone protocols and give a batch-adaptive implementation. On nonprofit homelessness casenotes and LMArena preference votes, RMSE falls 17–68% at 40%+ budgets and 55–62% at every budget on LMArena, a principled way to mix LLM-as-judge with scarce ground truth.

Injects synthetic anatomical fingerprints, rare controlled image features, into medical training data to probe how diffusion models trade off privacy and fairness. Across conditioning modalities the models never generalize the fingerprints to new images: they either forget them or memorize the entire image carrying them. A new indicator, t′, estimates memorization susceptibility from the diffusion process's internal structure without explicit extraction. High-surprisal conditioning acts as a retrieval key that amplifies memorization, while low-surprisal conditioning suppresses rare features even when they recur.

Linear probes, similarity to dedicated perceptual encoders, and causal interventions show the shared transformer builds task-usable perceptual representations in its early-to-middle layers before language processing takes over, a structure the authors call a Virtual Encoder. TimeInteract defines a streaming interaction regime for time-series language models: the model keeps ingesting observations, decides for itself when to speak, and keeps reading the stream while it responds. It combines a dual-view streaming encoder, a learned response trigger and decoupled control/generation inference. A new 34.6K-episode StreamTSI dataset spans four capability levels from understanding to adaptivity. The model beats LLM, VLM and TSLM baselines by up to 23.92 points, with near-zero stream stall and up to 2.15× faster inference.

Face/Off renames identifiers in ways that preserve program semantics but make names progressively less informative or actively misleading. Across models and code-comprehension tasks, accuracy drops as naming information degrades, and outputs often follow the meaning suggested by misleading names rather than the program structure. Prompting and fine-tuning interventions do not remove the effect, while type inference, where answers are locally recoverable, is less affected. The result argues for code evaluations that separate lexical shortcuts from semantic understanding.

This paper imports formal reliability-theory tools into frontier AI control and applies them to Google DeepMind's defenses against rogue deployment. Depending on how failure domains are shared, the same control stack can give cubic, quadratic or merely linear suppression of rare failures. Birnbaum importance ranks which component improvements buy the most nominal reliability, and prevention layers are shown to change the population on which recovery layers are demanded. The result is concrete guidance on what to separate, improve, measure and test when stacking control measures.

CoRePrune therefore prunes progressively, refreshing perturbation estimates as visual representations evolve, then re-evaluates whether to rescue candidates conditioned on the current deletion set after visual-text interaction. Across five MLLM backbones on standard images, high-resolution inputs and video it holds up under aggressive budgets; on Qwen3.5 with 128 visual tokens it keeps 90.3% of dense performance while cutting prefill time 51.0%.

Drifting yields one-step generative models, but learning stochastic transitions that way normally needs several next-state samples per current state, which trajectory data rarely provide. Block-triangular joint drifting applies a projected drift field to the observable joint distribution of consecutive states; the triangular structure preserves the current-state marginal so the second block directly samples the conditional next-state distribution. The surrogate rolls out stochastic trajectories with one network evaluation per step and shows better accuracy-cost trade-offs than deterministic, diffusion, flow and distillation surrogates.

Characterizes when an n-mode bosonic Gaussian state can be learned as cheaply as a classical 2n-variate Gaussian. Near-vacuum (cold) states are provably non-classical to learn: single-copy tomography needs Ω(n³) copies versus Θ(n²) classically, and the hardness persists with few-copy entangled measurements. When thermal noise exceeds vacuum by ν > 0, single-copy tomography needs Θ(n²·min(n, 1+1/ν)) copies, achieved by simple non-adaptive heterodyne measurements and dropping to the classical Θ(n²) for constant ν. This gives a tight quantum-to-classical crossover in learnability.

A naive port of residual vector quantization to the Poincaré ball fails because Möbius addition is non-associative and straight-through gradients ignore curvature. This work asks whether a looped estimator, one fitted operator applied repeatedly with shared parameters, beats an untied counterpart with separate per-iteration parameters under the same parameter budget. For general likelihood models it gives an upper bound on squared Hellinger risk for looped sieve MLE and a minimax lower bound for the tuned untied family, exposing a parameter-iteration-accuracy trade-off. Looped residual MLPs and a post-LN Transformer reach minimax rates for Hölder targets with a fixed number of bounded parameters, and at large fixed budgets looped risk vanishes with sample size while untied risk does not.

LOKI joins data-lake tables that share no join keys by using unstructured text as the bridge: a bidirectional cross-attention model learns row and sentence representations under only a global table-text contrastive loss, and fine-grained row-sentence links emerge without local supervision. For kNN anomaly detectors trained only on normal data, the authors derive an AUC lower bound tied to the separation and variances of inlier and outlier scores, and use a local scaling model to attribute score variability to density variation, intrinsic-dimension heterogeneity and domain mismatch. Inlier score variance alone fails as a label-free selection criterion across representations, so they add simple pseudo-anomaly probes as a reference. On DCASE 2022–2025 with four embedding models and 208 candidate systems, diverse pseudo-anomalies make anomaly-free model selection beat standard development-set selection under domain shift.

Label-wise expected calibration error for multi-label classification is poorly measured by existing binning schemes, which underestimate error, merely mirror label frequency, or leave many near-empty bins because negatives dominate. The authors propose a binning scheme that weights positive and negative label assignments equally, producing meaningful calibration estimates in hierarchical and extreme multi-label settings such as medical coding and news topic tagging. They also show that calibrating LLM confidence for multi-label predictions remains an open problem.

He contends that RL for coding has no reward signal for long-term design quality, that current SOTA models refactor poorly (for example, extracting helper functions that are not reusable), and that developers who delegate reading and writing code will not build expert intuition. He predicts companies will advertise 'no-AI' policies as a competitive advantage.

FairMean weights client gradients by a bounded, nondecreasing function of local loss, so high-loss clients still get priority but poisoned gradients cannot be amplified without limit. This paper builds a behavior layer over a fixed LLM (Qwen2.5-0.5B) with per-claim confidence, typed provenance, provenance-gated hedging and a persistent belief-revision store, and tests it under pre-registered criteria. Audit guarantees hold, and true corrections are accepted more than false ones (0.44 vs 0.15), but most pre-specified margins fail. A notable negative result: gating expressed doubt on mean token probability ranks correctness below chance (AUC 0.41), while sampling consistency works (AUC 0.66). The claims are carefully limited to a small benchmark.

Target- and multi-speaker extraction models trained on simulated mixtures assume balanced speech activity and enrolment clips that closely match the target speech. Neither holds in real multi-party conversations, where speakers are mostly silent and enrolment audio differs from conversational speech. A new loss that down-weights the dominant silent segments raises STOI from 0.55 to 0.60 and frequency-weighted segmental SNR from 4.35 to 5.12 on real recordings. The authors also analyze how enrolment–target mismatch degrades extraction.

Scenario-specific diffusion-model experts with Transformer denoisers learn distributions over secure beamforming and artificial-noise strategies; a lightweight gating network identifies the scenario from engineered channel features, and an attention-based combiner fuses proposals from the top experts to cover unseen scenarios. On WMT20 English-German, ratings improve loss reconstruction and severity prediction, and MICRO has the highest mean discovery count across four budget/cost settings, significantly beating all six comparison policies in three of them (p < .001).

This paper asks whether logs of what LLM agents chose for users can identify which product improvement the users would actually value. It formalizes a decision-specific audit that turns an observation channel and a value contrast into identified intervals, using standard identification and decision theory. In a frozen 4,800-call study on two pinned model snapshots, all 36 primary intervals stay unresolved. A deterministic extractor resolves 7 of 9 comparisons that model-generated reports leave ambiguous. Replicated simulations of an adaptive agent compare external disturbance, persistent internally generated disturbance and disturbance produced by the controller itself, under regulation-first and disturbance-first update ordering. Persistent internal disturbance yields the largest exposure and regulatory burden in the tested grid. When positive controller updates carry an immediate disturbance cost, raising that cost has a nonmonotonic effect: effective disturbance first rises, run-to-run variability grows at intermediate costs, and corrective activity is strongly suppressed at high cost. The author argues adaptive agents should be tested against distinct disturbance sources.
